I would suggest other cars in this class would be Ford Ka, Peugeot 106, Ford Fiesta, Citroen C1/C2, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, Nissan Micra, VW Polo, VW Fox, Seat Ibiza, Fiat Panda, Renault Twingo/Clio… I could go on.

The best advice I can give is to find a car under 1100cc, 5 door hatchback with lower spec levels, pretty common on the road and no alloys/bodykit accessories. This should see you bring the insurance down to under £1000 for a year. (Also if you live in a good postcode with off-street parking preferably a garage, no criminal convictions or claims made by any member of your household then you’ll get an even better deal!)

The cameras I would suggest to you are the Canon Rebel XT, and the Pentax K-100D. Both are comparable in price, features, and simplicity. Both also come with kit lenses (good thing because good lenses are costly).

I have a Yaris and I currently pay £850. A new driver would pay at least £900 for their insurance whatever car they have.

I’d avoid French cars (the peugeot, citroen and renault), they are known for poor reliabilty so you’ll spend a lot of money fixing things when they go wrong.

Without being bias, Yaris’ are great, I get at least 45mpg if not more, they’re pretty nippy, known for their reliability, as are other Toyotas and Nissans.

Vauxhall Corsas aren’t that economical, but they are fairly cheap and parts are readily available if anything does go wrong.

All the cheap ones are USB (which as you know are useless for you). If you can’t find a cheap one on ebay or such, and you are are technically minded you could purchase a used router and update the firmware with DD-WRT. This will let you set the router up as a bridge (client mode wireless). You can usually pick up a compatible router for less than $20.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at since they have top name insurers and can give multiple quotes on auto insurance polices.

I personally have a Linksys Router with SpeedBooster. There was a sale on it for 49.99 when i bought it 6 months ago. I love it. I never lose connection like others when play SSBB. I have 2 desktops so I got a compatible adapter for one and the other is hooked directly into the router. I also have a laptop that I use anywhere in the house. My wii and ps3 never lose internet connection when playing games. I’m happy with everything.

My in-laws have D-Link wireless router and they don’t have a problem with internet access. Just remember to get the protection plan on it so that if anything goes wrong it’s covered.

Other than that, definietly go with the wireless router.

You can use your food processor, but its probably overkill. I’m not sure if I’d toss ice in there, though – but that’s just me. If you use frozen fruit in lieu of ice, you should be fine.

You don’t have to buy new so ebay is a good way to go and I think you will find that you can grab up some really good deals in the price range you are seeking.

In the older cameras however, there are only three that I would highly recommend for ease of use, quality of output (you get out what you put in of course) and durability of operation.

Nikon being the first followed by Pentax and Minolta.

I won’t bother to tell you the models, you can find that out on Ebay just by finding those manufactures in your price range.

When you start looking at DSLR’s you are in the arena of the pros and as we all know we are all rocket scientists (well very in control of the technical aspects of producing images).

ANY SLR or DSLR can be used in the manual mode and you can be a rockette to do that.

Outdoor or not, all the pros use Nikon’s and Canons.

Your subjects will probably be best served using a macro lens and a good medium zoom lens (24-85mm is a good range)

All that said, you will be much ahead if you take the time to take a few photo classes at your local community college and learn to compose, expose, develop and print your images.

Basically any good used Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR that is 15 years old or less. Look for dings on the pentaprism, finger prints on the mirror or lenses that are not protected by a UV or skylight filter.

However…

We own 3 different DSLR’s and there is simply no comparison.

AND – the D200 was used with matrix metering on P or Program mode, which is the closest thing the D200 has to AUTO. I don’t recall for the SD900, but it was probably on manual mode so I could access ISO 80 for best image quality.

Contrary to the above poster, don’t remove the battery. Sometimes – not often, a TSA agent will ask to actuate the shutter to ensure the camera can.

With the current set of guidelines a DSLR may be taken on board. Xray does not damage a modern DSLR sensor. It may be that you will find that your equipment may be swabbed for explosives, but that is an additional 3-4 mins on a regular bag search – and routine.

Do not put expensive equipment in your checked luggage. A short while back people were talking of a $50 5D sold by dodgy baggage handlers in Florida

The only real concern might be the size and weight of the bags – to be compliant with airline regulations – not really of interest to a TSA agent.

You can either get one with poor picture quality, poor sound quality and poor build quality for £500.

Or, you can spend a bit more money and get something decent.

A couple of good places to start are (insurance information instute) and – both answer many questions about car insurance and the latter also provides links to get free online quotes.

2. Open the shutter, wait for lightning stroke, close the shutter.

3. As for camera settings, I have found that f11 works well when shooting at ISO 100. You may need to play with the lens opening to get things looking right.

4. Use a wide angle zoom setting (12 to 18mm) unless the storm is far away. You don’t know exactly where the bolt(s) will strike.

5. Manual focus to infinity.

6. Post editing: Use a photo editor and adjust the image levels to bring out the detail of the stroke. There are lots of dim events in a lightning stroke which add to the beauty of the event. If you use raw mode, you can post process the image to your liking.

Use the Bulb setting. It will keep your shutter open for as long as you press the shutter release button. After the stroke of lightning, release the shutter release button. If a stroke of lightning doesn’t occur within a minute, release the shutter button and start anew. Keeping the shutter open for a long time will give you excess background noise and sometimes a purple fringe on the image. If you have excess city lights, it will fog your exposure.

You need to disable the flash. That shouldn’t be a problem since you need to set your camera in manual mode to do the above.

One of the biggest problems with taking photos is a lack of sharpness of subjects. Digital point and shoots have physically smaller sensors than SLRs, which helps to increase depth of field (the area in focus). In other words, at the same settings, the point and shoot is more likely to have more area in focus and this often helps people who are not good at taking photos, particularly family photos with groups of people or vacation photos with objects in the foreground and background that they want to be sharp.

In terms of exposure, digital SLRs are actually better because they have more sophisticated metering systems, which are more accurate whether the SLR is used in Auto, manual or other modes.

A digital SLR has far more advantages making it the better choice to get better photos. However, to get the same depth of field as a point and shoot, you’ll have to change the aperture to get more depth of field, which requires a bit of photographic skill and knowledge. Essentially though, it’s the increased depth of field which makes point and shoots attractive to people who are not very skilled at taking sharp photos. However, for a skilled photographer, having control over the depth of field is very important.

In any case, there’s no truth to the statement about the assumptions for compact cameras and SLRs. It’s simply an issue of physics.

One tip. Before you use any type of solution or swab, get yourself a good foot blower (much, much better than the hand rocket blowers). Lock up your mirror and have at it. I find that this actually works a good percentage of the time without having to use solution. Afterwards, take a picture of something white at F22 or F32 and this will show you how clean your sensor is.

Depends on where you are going to sit, I would bring EF 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2 or 135mm f/2 L if possible. 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L is also a good choice.

Salon: Alterna and Pureology, Redken

I have used these brands for a few years now and love them.
I get great results.

I have used Nexus, Biolage, and Paul Mitchell. They are ok at best. Nexus is better than Paul Mitchell. The stylists that I have been to don’t recommend these products.

My current stylist recommended Pureology (color hair) and Alterna. I’ve used Alterna before and just loved it.

I don’t know if there is one brand because there are different hair types. I don’t think one company can be great across the board.

Best seller? I’m sure. It’s probably a drug store brand, without a doubt.

edit: Salon products change fairly often. Paul Mitchell and Nexus have been around a long time and still continue to be sold in salons. (at least 30+ years)

edit again: In that case, Paul Mitchell. It is sold in probably at least 95% if not 100% of salons. I see it everywhere. It is also sold in grocery and drug stores.

edit: It could be that Paul Mitchell has a great distribution strategy. I don’t think it’s related to quality. I talk with stylists regularly and I’ll tell them how I feel about Paul Mitchell not being very good and they agree. Not one stylist has disagreed with me. I will say that I like the price and have tried it again to see if maybe it has changed but not yet.

PS cameras are ok for snap shots, however it sounds like you want to be more involved in your photography. For this you need a camera with a lens mount which can accomodate all types of lenses and filters, extention tubes and maybe even bellows.

There are two types of camera that fit the above description in small format photography. First one is a rangefiner (this is what Leica is famous for) and the second type is an SLR camera. SLR’s are the most popular small format camera. Nikon are the market leaders at the moment, with Canon a close second. All other manufacturers are just playing catch up. Sony are ones to watch for the future, but are still a far cry from the two I previously mentioned.

The reason I talk about market leadership is that when you buy an SLR, you are buying into a ’system’. If you buy Nikon, you buy Nikon lenses or Nikon equivelant lenses. Same with Canon, Sony et al. Nikon and Canon have the largest range of lenses and accessories available to use and in fact you can use fifty year old Nikon lenses on brand new DSLR’s.

Which ever brand you decide on, I strongly recommend that you start with a prime lens. By this a mean a lens of a fixed focal length (not a zoom). I would start out with a 50mm lens. These are usually the cheapest lenses and replicate roughly the way the human eye sees things. Come to grips with the focal length, learn how it reproduces the images you take. Use it, and nothing but it for three months (depending on how often you shoot). Then change to another focal length such as a wide angle, then onto a telephoto. Another way to do this, if you do not wish to own prime lenses (perhaps your camera comes with a kit lens), is to set the zoom lens to 50mm* on the marking on the lens, and have the dicipline to keep it at that focal lenght until you have come to grips with, as described above. Do not be tempted to zoom in or out.

The problem with zoom lenses is that most people who learn with them, end up using them incorrectly. The correct way to use a zoom is to visualise the desired focal length of the image you want to take (this is something you will learn to do, especially if you use the method I described earlier), set the zoom to the desired focal length, then look through the viewfinder and frame the shot. If your subject is not big enough, then use your feet to step forward. If it is too big, then step back. Zooms are only designed to eliminate the need to carry several focal length lenses, not to just stand in one spot and zoom in or out like you would on a point and shoot camera.

So to give a recommendation, I like Nikon.
